Can Elmo save Kevin Rudd this Christmas?
| 17 December 2008
| The current global economic situation may have ended the honeymoon for Prime Minister Kevin Rudd - with Australian shoppers rating his likelihood of saving Christmas well below that of Sesame Street puppet Elmo.
A recent survey of visitors to the Lasoo.com.au website found that only 5.5% of shoppers believe PM Rudd will be the one to save Christmas, well behind Elmo at 15%.
The dip in the economy has led to Australian shoppers watching their hip pockets this Christmas, with 95% rating price as an important factor when making their Christmas purchases. Less than 2% of respondents did not consider price an important factor in their festive purchasing decisions.
The majority of survey participants estimated their total Christmas spend would be under $1000, with less than 10% stating they would spend over $2000. However almost one-third of participants said they often or always blow their Christmas budget.
Despite all the economic doom and gloom, the Christmas spirit is still alive in Australian shoppers, with 36% of survey respondents still believing in Santa. How Santa is going to make most of his deliveries is unclear, as nearly 80% do not have a chimney.
